Day 02 - Exploring San Francisco with Susanne

What could be more cross-cultural than exploring an American city with a German friend I originally met in France many years ago? Susanne is in the process of spending her second summer in San Francisco after having spent six months here last year while on Sabbatical from Ulm University. Consequently Susanne has already developed a network of local friends and was a well qualified guide to begin the day exploring the Mission District, with its street art and mural lined lane ways.

Susanne enjoying Jamaican Coffee
After a long and leisurely lunch at an outdoor cafe on a quiet street we caught a bus to the more well-to-do Nob Hill area, starting with a visit to the magnificent Grace Cathedral. The next few hours were spent exploring Nob Hill, Russian Hill and then North Beach. Somewhere along the way we came across a small shop emanating a delightful fresh coffee smell and went in to explore. It turned out to run by by a German speaking local originally from Jamaica who was in the business of marketing their family's own organic blend of Jamaican coffee beans. We certainly enjoyed the coffee made from fresh beans just 30 minutes out of the roaster. A delightful serendipity!

Later, after we had sampled the excellent gelato in the Italian North Beach quarter, we strolled on to the Fort Mason area down on the bay. We noted that all but one of the swimmers in the bay was wearing a wetsuit, which just meant that only one of them was completely nuts. With the traditional San Francisco early evening fog rolling in we adjourned back to the Mission District to dine at a Peruvian Restaurant. It was obviously very popular and with the delicious food, quick service and great prices it was not hard to see why.

So ended a relaxing day of exploring an interesting city in perfect weather in the company of a good friend. Looking forward to more days like this as I continue my whistle-stop tour of the USA.
