Day 08 - Eugene to Portland

No rush to get up this morning after a good night's sleep - well and truly over the jet lag by now. A pleasant morning of post-breakfast conversation with Dorothy & Will continued after a walk to a nearby coffee shop to sample a local brew. Dorothy had to go home to work afterwards but Will and I lingered on discussing different cultures we had encountered (American included) until about 11:00am. We then walked to a nearby National History Museum which opened at that hour. It was surprising to learn that there are deserts in Oregon. There was also an interesting little photo exhibition on display.

Then it was a walk home to have lunch with Dorothy. Afterwards, Dorothy dragged out her old photos of Thailand and Burma in 1987/88, including some that she had taken of me during that time.

By now it was time to pack and get ready to leave. There was just time to setup the tripod and get a photo of the three of us sitting on the couch. It was a nice way to round off what has been a wonderful relaxing visit to catch up with Dorothy and Will. (If I photoshop in a picture of Lee later we will have a composite photo of the foursome who played cards together at Krabi in December 1987!).
Three veterans of Krabi, 1987.
Thereafter it was just a short drive downtown to catch the 2:50pm Amtrak bus to Portland. After saying farewell to Dorothy and Will we were away pretty much on time but the peak hour traffic in Portland meant that we didn't get there until 6:10pm, or about 45 minutes late. Which didn't bother me any, but the people catching the 6:10pm train to Seattle were getting worried. (They held the train anyway).

Since the hostel I had booked was only 12 short blocks away I opted to hoof it. Later on a walk up to the local supermarket I watched a bit of a samba concert going on in a little park with a couple of hundred people of all ages joining in the dancing. Portland is a pretty hip place it seems!
