Mt Shasta, viewed from the train around breakfast time. |
My train seemed to perform some sort of quantum miracle early today. After leaving Dunsmir CA 54 minutes late (@5:56am) it arrived in Klamath Falls OR only 2 minutes late (@ 8:27am). Did it find a short cut somewhere? The good thing was that I was able to get a reasonable amount of sleep, with an empty seat beside me and way more leg room than you get on a plane. The scenery as we passed through the Cascade Mountains was also pretty spectacular, with some mountains still snow capped even this late in summer. There were also many pine covered slopes which look so different to the eucalyptus forests we see at home. I am glad I decided on the train to Eugene instead of the plane.

And so it came to pass that I arrived in Eugene right on time at 12:44pm, where Will was waiting to collect me for the short drive home. It has been only five years since Will and Sebastian stayed with us in Sydney but it has been almost 20 years since I had seen Dorothy, when she and Will had dinner with us in Sydney one evening when Sam was just a baby. And we've all passed a lot of water since then!
After a late-ish lunch Dorothy, Will and I went for a walk through the nearby Hendricks Park, most of which gave the feeling that you could have been miles from the city. There was time to sit and talk a while in a shady glen along the way and also time to stop for a very nice ice cream at a local landmark ice-creamery. (Obama even stopped there during his election campaign).
Thereafter it was a nice quiet late afternoon and evening, during which I was given a guided tour of "Will's Folly", the multi-story "tree house" in the back yard that Will has been working on for about decade. I also managed to get into my Facebook account for the first time this trip, and re-assure it that the attempted access from Oakland had been legitimate.
